Security Analyst with the West African Network for Peace Building, Abukarir Shiabu has said the presence Fulani nomads from Burkina Faso seeking Zebilla in the Upper East Region should not be seen as source of concern.
About 600 Fulanis from the towns of Yorikor and Zaabire in Burkina Faso are seeking refuge in Zebilla after conflicts erupted in their respective towns.
Though many people have raised concerns about the coming in of the Fulanis, Abukarir Shiabu has allayed such fears saying, the situation is not dreadful.
“These are people who are coming from across the border from Burkina Faso, they are Fulanis as we all know and they had some misunderstanding with their neighbours…I am not quite sure whether their presence in Ghana or in that part of our country will disturb the Bawku area.”
He added that “I am sure people are worried because of the situation in the Bawku area but these are two ethnic groups and they have no bearing or whatsoever with the issues around the Bawku conflict.”
Meanwhile, the Zebilla District Police Commander, DSP Christian Dogbatse has also given the assurance that his outfit will keep a close eye on the Fulanis.
“In as much as we think about their safety, I think we also have cause to worry because considering the background of some of these Fulani men who engage themselves in either nefarious activities and robbery and all that and so it is a source of worry to us that the people might be apprehensive so we are not leaving any stone unturned at all.”
He added that they will be under close observation and adequate security will also be provided for the residents in the area.
